At the invitation of ALDE Party President Sir Graham Watson, liberal Prime Ministers and European Commissioners met to discuss a pan-European response to the refugee crisis, the recent events in Syria as well as the upcoming referendum on British membership of the EU.
ALDE Party member FDP/PLR from Switzerland obtained very positive results on Sunday 18 October when in federal elections they saw an increase of the number of votes and thereby cementing its place among the ‘‘big three’’ in Swiss politics.
Boris Nemtsov, former co-chair of ALDE Party member PARNAS, is one of the shortlist candidates for the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize. Nemtsov, a Russian liberal reformer and vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin, was murdered in February this year.
From 16 to 18 October, the capital of Senegal, Dakar, was the host city of the 10th ALDE Pacific, African and Caribbean Conference. As noted by Louis Michel, co-president of the ALDE PAC: ‘Africa has about 30% of global natural resources but produces only 1.4% of global wealth.’
The ALDE Party’s individual members meeting entitled ‘Liberalism in the 21st century Balkans’ was held in Sofia, Bulgaria on 17 October 2015. It was the very first gathering of the individual members from the wider Balkan region – Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Romania, Serbia and Turkey.
The second edition of the Animate Europe International Comics Competition, organised by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, has drawn to a close. The German student Nicole Knötig was awarded the first prize for her comic ”The Union”.
The mandate of the steering committee comes to an end at the ALDE Party Congress in Budapest. Therefore, next week, individual members will be invited to vote online for a new committee. Full details are available on the ALDE Party website.
On Monday 26 October, less than 24 hours after the polling stations in Poland close, ALDE Party together with FNF Europe will host a Liberal Breakfast on the Polish elections. The speakers will be Polish journalists Dominika Cosic and Blazej Lenkowski and ALDE Party Secretary General Jacob Moroza-Rasmussen.
