ALDE Party member in the Czech Republic ANO 2011 emerged the big victors from the country’s regional elections and first round of Senate elections held on 8-9 October. Confirming their long-standing position as the leading party in opinion polls, ANO won the most votes and seats in 9 of the 13 regions.
Elected on Tuesday 11 October by the ALDE Group in the Committee of the Regions, Bart Somers from ALDE Party member Open Vld, will serve as ALDE-CoR’s President until 2020. Bart Somers is also the Mayor of the Belgian municipality of Mechelen and the leader of the liberal group in the Flemish Parliament.
On Sunday 9 October Lithuanian citizens headed to the polls to vote for a new Parliament. ALDE Party member Liberal Movement, led by Remigijus Šimašius, achieved 9% of the votes to get returned to Parliament with 8 seats from the national election lists, the best results in the history of Liberalai.
Individual members have been meeting recently in Greece, Belgium and Italy. In Greece, the workshop focused on the ‘politics of policymaking’ and aimed at developing the skills of the participants which allowed them to set out the priorities for individual members in Greece for the 2017-18 period.
Republican Party of Georgia and Free Democrats failed to re-enter the Georgian Parliament in Georgia’s national elections on 8 October. Both liberal parties became victim of the voters’ focus on the rivalry between the main governing party Georgian Dream and the main opposition party United National Movement.
Liberal Agriculture Ministers and representatives gathered in Luxembourg on 10 October for a Pre-Council Ministerial Meeting ahead of the AGRIFISH Council Meeting that day. Co-hosted by Luxembourg’s Minister Fernand Etgen, the participants discussed over the simplification of the Common Agricultural Policy.
The Sakharov Prize honours every year individuals and organisations defending human rights and fundamental freedoms. Nadia Murad Basee and Lamiya Aji Bashar, two advocates for women surviving sexual enslavement by the Islamic State, nominated by the ALDE Group, have been shortlisted as finalists.
Individual members with an address in Spain and that have paid their membership fee by 1 October will receive this Friday by e-mail their ballot with which they can elect their country coordinators. Members can choose from six candidates.
