Emmanuel Macron was elected as the new President of France on Sunday 7 April. ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen MEP said: “France has shown that a European spring is possible. I am confident that Macron will make France a driving force for European change.”
Where does Emmanuel Macron and his political movement stand? And can they unite French people again? These were the main questions addressed at the ALDE Party and FNF Europe Liberal breakfast on Monday 8 May following Macron’s election as the new French President.
European Liberals are leading the way. The ALDE Party has been legally recognised as the first European political party. ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen MEP said: “European political parties play an increasingly important role in the development of European politics.”
On the occasion of Europe Day, we launched a pro-European campaign to celebrate peace and unity in Europe. Over 600 supporters joined our Thunderclap petition online in one week contributing to show our opponents how many of us are in love with Europe.
At the regional elections in Schleswig-Holstein on 7 May FDP obtained its second best result ever with 11.5% under the leadership of Wolfgang Kubicki. This strong showing presents an excellent backing for the upcoming regional elections in Nordrhein-Westfalen next weekend.
On 6 May Italian ALDE Party Individual Members took part in the event “Europe, Taxation, Justice” in Milan to debate innovative ideas to free Italy from populism. The leader of the ALDE Group in the European Parliament Guy Verhofstadt also addressed the conference.

On Saturday 6 May the European institutions in Brussels opened their doors to citizens during EU Open Day. Both the ALDE Group in the European Parliament and in the Committee of the Regions joined the initiative and discussed with visitors about their work at the institutions.
Last weekend, in a seminar organised by the European Liberal Forum and FNF Europe, the Social Media Managers from ALDE member parties and partner organisations came together in Berlin to successfully exchange best practices on how to counter populists and fake news online.
