FDP reacts to Germany’s grand coalition
On Sunday Germanys’ Social Democrats voted in favour of another grand coalition with Angela Merkel’s centre-right party clearing the way for a new government. FDP’s Christian Lidner reacted: “I would have been very surprised if the party had turned down a coalition deal that features 70% of SPD policies.”

Più Europa obtain 4 seats in the Italian Parliament
On 4 March Italy held general elections. The pro-European list +Europa con Emma Bonino, which includes Radicali Italiani, did not manage to pass the 3% via the proportional system. However, they have been able to win 3 seats in the single-member constituencies and 1 seat in the European constituency.

Manifesto Committee meets for the first time
On 2 March the ALDE Manifesto Committee for the 2019 European elections, chaired by Taavi Rõivas, came together for the very first time in Brussels. They aim to write an optimistic, innovative and even disruptive text that tackles the most relevant challenges of these days and that can inspire voters.

Pechtold: “Down-to-earth idealism is D66’s success”
On Saturday 3 March D66 gathered in Rotterdam for their 107th Congress, as they prepare for the Dutch local elections on 21 March. D66 members voted on resolutions and listened to inspiring speeches by D66 leader Alexander Pechtold, ALDE-CoR President Bart Somers, among others.

Verhofstadt presents ALDE’s blueprint on EU-Russia
ALDE Group leader Guy Verhofstadt presented a new strategy paper to deal with Russia: “The EU needs more than a joint position on sanctions. We need a proactive strategy to get the EU-Russia relationship out of its current stalemate and to motivate Russia to start behaving in a more responsible manner.”

EP launches new committee to tackle tax evasion
Last week the European Parliament set up a new committee which will continue to tackle financial crimes, tax evasion and tax avoidance. ALDE Group MEP Petr Ježek commented: “Fair taxation is certainly one of the elements which would enhance the benefits of globalisation.”
